Emmys: Variety Writing Award Returned to Telecast Following TV Community Outcry
The prize, which had long been presented on primetime TV, was going to be presented this year during an untelevised Creative Arts ceremony.
The Television Academy and Fox have reached an agreement with the Writers Guild of America to return the Emmy for outstanding writing for a variety series to the Primetime Emmys telecast, it was just announced.
There had been a loud outcry from writers and other artists after word got out that the category, which has long been presented on the Primetime Emmys telecast, was going to be moved to an untelevised Creative Arts ceremony.
“We didn’t spend months on strike, fighting to receive the recognition we deserve for the work we help create, only to be pushed to the sidelines when it comes time to do exactly that,” the guild’s leadership wrote to the TV Academy and Fox in an open letter on Nov. 28, which was followed in December by a petition signed by some 1400 union members.
The writing staffs nominated for the award this year hail from The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Saturday Night Live.
